Advanced Silicon Processing and Manufacturing Technologies (Modular)

  1. This IGDS MSc is taught jointly by a number of partner institutions.

  2. Each candidate will be required to undertake eight modules, one of which will be mandatory.

  3. In addition, each candidate must undertake a project, the title of which must be approved by the Institution at which the candidate is registered.

  4. The duration of the course will be a minimum of two years and normally a maximum of four years.

Microelectronics Systems Design; Instrumentation and Transducers; Radio Frequency Communications Systems; and Optical Fibre Communications.

  1. The four MSc courses comprise a common core teaching block and specialist streams leading to four separate MSc qualifications. The MSc qualification will be determined by the choice of project and the associated specialist modules.

  2. Candidates may only register for the degree of Master of Science.

  3. Candidates may be permitted on a full-time or part-time basis. For full-time candidature, Regulations 1 and 2 above apply, as do the General MSc Regulations.

  4. Part-time candidates shall normally be in full-time employment in a relevant industrial post; active participation of the employer in various aspects of the course is expected.

  5. Part-time candidature may begin at any time during the year, and shall cease on successful completion of an award or after a period of five years after initial registration, whichever is sooner.

  6. Project work for part-time candidates shall normally be undertaken at the candidate's place of employment, provided that satisfactory supervision by the University can be arranged.

  7. Candidates failing to satisfy the examiners for any module or for the dissertation shall be permitted to be re-examined for that module or for the dissertation on one further occasion.

  8. Retrospective registration for the degree of MSc will be permitted and credits for any module successfully completed may contribute to the course requirements. Registrations may not be backdated by more than two years.

Information Engineering (Modular)

  1. Candidates shall normally be in full-time employment in a relevant industrial post; active participation of the employer in various aspects of the course is expected.

  2. Candidature may begin at any time during the year, and shall cease on successful completion of an award, or after a period of five years after initial registration, whichever is sooner.

  3. Project work shall normally be undertaken at the candidate's place of employment.

  4. Each module will last not more than two months, and shall be so timetabled that not less than fifteen modules will be made available during any eighteen month period. Modules may be withdrawn or substituted at any time at the discretion of the Head of Department.

  5. Following successful completion of twelve modules, candidates may be awarded the Diploma of the University of Southampton. Candidates wishing to proceed to the MSc shall undertake a project and prepare a dissertation. Such candidates whose dissertations satisfy the examiners will be awarded the degree of MSc in such cases, the Diploma will not be awarded.

  6. Candidates failing to satisfy the examiners for any module or for the dissertation shall be permitted to be re-examined for that module or for the dissertation on one further occasion.

Continuing Education in Electronic Systems Integration (CEESI) (Modular)

  1. This MSc is taught jointly by a number of partner institutions.

  2. Each candidate will be required to undertake modules to make a total of 120 credits.

  3. In addition, each candidate must undertake a project, the title of which must be approved by the Institution at which the candidate is registered.

  4. The duration of the course will be a minimum of two years and normally a maximum of five years.
