Regulations for the Degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours in Neonatal Studies)

1. The post-registration course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Neonatal Studies shall be of one calendar year duration.

2. Students may register with the University to undertake Level 3 degree studies once the following admission criteria, and the Regulations for Admission to Degree Courses as specified in Section IV of the General_Regulations, have been met:
   1. Registration as a First Level Nurse, or Midwife with the UKCC
   2. Undertaken the ENB 405 (Special and Intensive Care of the Newborn Course) or equivalent.
   3. Undertaken the ENB 997/998 (Teaching and Assessing in Clinical Practice) or equivalent.
   4. A minimum of four years experience, normally post ENB 405 qualification, in a neonatal unit which regularly provides intensive care;
   5. Have fulfilled all appropriate status and health requirements.

3. Normally students will complete the required studies by submission of a dissertation within a minimum of 15 months and a maximum of 18 months, from the start of the course.

4. In order to qualify for the degree, students must:
   1. Have satisfied the entry requirements;
   2. Have successfully completed an approved course of study, passing all the required assessments and examinations;
   3. Have completed satisfactorily all practical work, clinical work and other course work as required;
   4. And have fulfilled all English National Board requirements.

5. The course curriculum consists of:
   1. Five modules taught over 17 weeks in Advanced Neonatal Nursing, Applied Neonatal Care, Behavioural Sciences, Biomedical Sciences applied to the Neonate, and Principles of Research in Clinical Practice, in parallel with
   2. Clinical experience. Clinical learning outcomes are achieved over 20 weeks during the course.

6. Students shall be examined by means of a series of assessments. Assessment of theory and clinical practice will be by written examinations, assignments, continuous assessment in the clinical area, a viva voce and a dissertation, all of which contribute to the final honours classification.

7. A student who fails to satisfy the examiners in any component of the course (including the dissertation), will normally be re-examined within the following 3 months of the notification of failure. Failure at re-examination will normally result in a recommendation for termination of course.

8. The degree of Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Neonatal Studies will be awarded to successful candidates as follows: First class, Second class, (upper division), Second class (lower division) and Third class.
