MSc Citizenship and Governance
MSc Global Politics (Research)

1. Candidates may only register for the degree of Master of Science in the Social Sciences.

MSc Global Politics (Research)

1. Candidates may only register for the degree of Master of Science in the Social Sciences.

2. The course programme shall be one of full time study only.

3. A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in the taught component of the course programme may take supplementary examinations as indicated in section 6 of the general regulations for Master of Science in the Social Sciences and postgraduate diploma courses. A candidate who fails to reach the required standard following these examinations may, with the permission of the examiners, apply to transfer to the Diploma/MSc in Global Politics and be considered for the award of the Diploma in Global Politics.

Social Work Studies

1. A candidate must normally be a graduate of an approved university. A candidate who is not a graduate of an approved university may be admitted to the course by the Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences on the recommendation of the Department of Social Work Studies.

2. A candidate may be required to undertake a period of preliminary study and to pass examinations as specified by the department concerned before undertaking the scheme of study.

Scheme of Study

3. The scheme of study will comprise lectures, course work and supervised field-work.

4. A candidate is required to undertake the scheme of study over a period of not less than six terms of full-time study.

Assessment and Award

5. All components of the scheme of study will be assessed during and/or at the end of the period of study as specified by the department concerned.

6. A candidate who passes all assessments, including designated field-work placements, and submits a dissertation which satisfies the examiners, shall be awarded the degree of Master of Science in the Social Sciences. The degree may be awarded with distinction.

7. A candidate who passes all assessments, including designated field-work placements, shall be awarded the Diploma of the University of Southampton (DipSoton).

8. A candidate who fails the assessment initially may with the approval of the Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences be permitted to complete supplementary work and be assessed on such work. A candidate who completes the supplementary assessment satisfactorily will be entitled only to the award of the Diploma of the University of Southampton (DipSoton).

Termination of course for unprofessional conduct

9. In cases where the behaviour of a student registered on this programme is considered to be unprofessional, damaging or dangerous to either service users, other students or programme providers, or is considered to be unethical or creates unacceptable risk for themselves or others a recommendation may be made for termination of programme, in accordance with procedures set out in the relevant departmental student handbook. This procedure may be invoked at any time during the programme when a student's behaviour has been called into question, including either during a practice placement or after practice has been completed, or at any time during the academic part of the programme.

Dip/MSc in Professional Studies

Admission

1. Candidates will normally be graduates of an approved university and hold a CCETSW approved qualification and must have had a minimum of two years post-qualification experience. Students with other qualifications acceptable to the Head of the Department of Social Work Studies may with the approval of the Faculty Board be admitted to the course. The Head of Department may recommend to the Faculty Board the admission of candidates without such qualifications where their prior learning has been accredited within the Faculty APL system. Exemption from parts of the course may be granted where evidence of equivalent qualification is produced under the APEL scheme. Holders of the CCETSW award in Practice Teaching and possessing an appropriate professional qualification may claim exemption from the Practice Teaching in Social Work component.

Scheme of Study

2. The taught Diploma will comprise a core component and one option specialist component. A candidate must complete the Diploma to a satisfactory level before being eligible for entry to the Master's phase of the course. Students will complete the scheme of study over a period of not less than one year (full-time) and not more than three years (part-time). Each free standing module may be taken as a continuing education course attracting appropriate credit rating at level M. Candidates who do not wish to be assessed, may be eligible for a certificate of attendance.

Assessment and Award

3. Assessment will be consistent with standard procedures of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and made up of course work marks (including reports of practical work and written assignments) and a dissertation mark. All components of the scheme of study will be assessed during and/or at the end of the period of study. Percentage marks will be awarded according to the standard of work, to fit the CATS scheme.

   A candidate who has qualified for the award of Diploma at a satisfactory level may, with the approval of the Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences, be permitted to undertake further study and research and to submit a dissertation.

   A candidate who has satisfied the examiners in the dissertation will forego the award of the Diploma and be awarded the degree of Master of Science in the Social Sciences. The degree may be awarded with distinction.

   A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in the dissertation may either be awarded the Diploma of the University of Southampton, or be permitted by the Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences on the recommendation of the Head of Department to resubmit a dissertation in a bound form, normally within a period of six months (full-time candidates) and twelve months (part-time candidates). Qualified social work students may be eligible for the CCETSW Advanced Award on successful completion of the MSc course.

Special Regulations for Dip/MSc in Professional Studies (Family Therapy Practice)

1. To be eligible for the award of the Dip/MSc in Professional Studies (Family Therapy Practice) a candidate must satisfy the examiners in the clinical practice unit. A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in this unit but who otherwise meets the requirements for the Diploma or Masters degree will be awarded the Diploma or Masters degree in Professional Studies (Family Therapy Theory). In no other circumstances will the University award the Diploma or Masters degree Professional Studies (Family Therapy Theory).

Educational Psychology

General

1. The degree of Master of Science in the Social Sciences is awarded by the Senate on the recommendation of the Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences to candidates who have completed twenty-four months of part-time study followed by twelve months of full-time study (or exceptionally under regulation 3 twelve months of full-time study only) to the satisfaction of the Departments of Psychology and Education and passed the required examination.

Admission

2. Applicants for entry to the course shall have (i) an honours degree in Psychology of an approved university or CNAA and (ii) an appropriate Certificate in Education of the University of Southampton obtained after following a certificate course at the University or in an affiliated institution. Exceptionally candidates with other qualifications approved by the Head or Heads of Department concerned may be accepted by the Faculty Board.

3. Exceptionally an applicant may be admitted directly to Part II of the course. Such applicants shall normally (i) have an honours degree in Psychology of an approved university and (ii) either have successfully completed a postgraduate Certificate in Education course and taught for at least two years in a recognised school or schools approved for this purpose or have taught for at least three years in such a school or schools.

Scheme of Study

4. The course shall consist of two parts: Part I shall comprise two years of supervised teaching in a recognised school or schools approved for this purpose by the Head or Heads of Department concerned. During these years candidates will be visited in their schools by University tutors and shall attend at the University as prescribed by the Head or Heads of Department concerned.

   Part II shall consist of a twelve months full-time course in Educational Psychology. The course shall begin in September and shall be based on lectures, seminars and tutorials with members of the staff of the Departments of Psychology and of Education and of other relevant departments and outside agencies. Candidates shall also be required to engage in clinical and practical work as prescribed by the Head or Heads of Department concerned. This shall include day visits to schools, child guidance clinics and other establishments and two or more periods of continuous work in child guidance services.

5. At the end of Part I of the course a candidate must satisfy the Head or Heads of Department concerned of (i) his/her continuing competence as a teacher and (ii) his/her satisfactory performance during the part-time course of study before being admitted to Part II.

Examinations

6. Examination shall be by the assessment of clinical, practical and written coursework and a dissertation.

7. The dissertation shall be submitted by 31 December immediately following the final year (Part II) of the course. Detailed requirements for dissertations shall be prescribed from time to time by the Head or Heads of Department concerned.

8. Candidates may be required to attend an oral examination.

9. With the approval of the Faculty Board a candidate who fails to reach the required standard in the written coursework and/or dissertation may be re-examined on one subsequent occasion only. A candidate who satisfies the written requirements but fails to obtain a satisfactory report on his/her clinical and practical work may be permitted to undertake one further period of clinical and practical work. Re-examination shall normally take place within twelve months of the end of the candidate's course. The conditions of the re-examination of any candidate shall be prescribed by the Faculty Board.

Health Psychology

1. Candidates must normally be graduates of an approved university or of CNAA. Candidates without such qualifications may be admitted to the course by the Faculty Board on the recommendation of the Head of the Psychology Department.

2. Candidates will be required to show competence in the use of English.

Scheme of Study

3. Candidates may follow modules as freestanding continuing education attracting credit or enrol for the Diploma.

   The taught Diploma will comprise four core modules and two option modules. A candidate must complete the Diploma to a satisfactory level before being eligible for entry to the Master's phase of the course. Students will complete the scheme of study over a period of not less than one year (full-time) and not more than three years (part-time). The course will run from September to June annually. Part-time students will register for two academic years and those admitted to the Master's phase will submit their dissertations at the end of June in their third year. Each free standing module will comprise 4 assessed units of study, each of which may be taken as a continuing education course attracting an appropriate credit rating at level M.

   Candidates who do not wish to be assessed, may be eligible for a certificate of attendance.

Postgraduate Certificate in Ageing, Health and Community Care, Childrens' Welfare, Family Therapy, Equal Opportunities, Management of Voluntary Organisations, Managing Practice Learning, Psychosocial Palliative Care, Research Methods

1. Candidates will normally be graduates of an approved university and hold a CCETSW approved qualification and must have had a minimum of two years post qualification experience. Students with other qualifications acceptable to the Head of the Department of Social Work Studies may with the approval of the Faculty Board be admitted to the course. The Head of Department may recommend to the Faculty Board the admission of candidates without such qualifications where their prior learning has been accreditited within the faculty APL system.

2. The taught certificate comprises the four units of the relevant Specialist option of the Diploma/MSc in Professional Studies. Students will complete the scheme of study over a period of not less than one year (full-time) and not more than two years (part-time). Candidates on the certificate in Management of Voluntary Organisations (by distance learning) will complete the programme over not more than one year and not more than four years.

Assessment and Award

3. Assessment will be consistent with standard procedures of the Faculty of Social Sciences and will be made up of course work marks including reports of practical work and written assignments. All components of the scheme of study will be assessed during and/or at the end of a period of study. Percentage marks will be awarded according to the standard of work to fit the CAT scheme.

Regulations for Postgraduate Certificate Courses in Economics, Economics and Econometrics, International Relations, Financial Managerial Controls and Management Sciences

1. A candidate must normally be a graduate of an approved university. A candidate who is not a graduate of an approved university may be admitted to a course by the Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences on the recommendation of the department responsible for that course.

Scheme of Study

2. The scheme of study will comprise lectures and other coursework. Provision may also be made for specialised study.

3. A candidate is required to undertake the scheme of study over a period of not less than three terms of full-time study or six terms of part-time study.

Examinations

4. All components of the scheme of study will be examined during and/or at the end of the period of study, as specified by the department concerned.

5. A candidate who fails initially to satisfy the examiners may in exceptional circumstances be permitted to take supplementary examinations at dates to be specified.

Certificate

6. The Certificate will be awarded by Senate to a candidate who has satisfactorily completed the scheme of study and passed the examinations prescribed.

Postgraduate Certificate in English with International Banking/Information Systems/Management Science/Accounting

1. A candidate must normally be a graduate of an approved university. A candidate who is not a graduate of an approved university may be admitted to the course by the Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences on the recommendation of the Department of Accounting and Management Science.

2. Only students who have been provisionally admitted to one of the MSc programmes offered by the Department of Accounting and Management Science but who do not possess the required English language skills are eligible for admission to this course. For such students successful completion of the Certificate is a prerequisite for final acceptance into the MSc programme.

3. Only students who possess scores between 4.0 and 5.5 on the IELTS test are eligible for admission.

Scheme of Study

4. The scheme of study will comprise lectures, classes and other coursework provided by the Language Centre and the Department of Accounting and Management Science.

5. A candidate is required to undertake the scheme of study over a period of not less than two semesters of full-time study.

Examinations

6. All components of the scheme of study will be examined during and/or at the end of the period of study, as specified by the Language Centre and the Department of Accounting and Management Science.
