Fieldwork requirements

a. Residential field courses are held in association with the following units:

  1. SOES1003: an introductory one-week course and two-day course in Geology
  2. SOES2007: a one-week course in marine biology (Oceanography with Marine Biology students only)
  3. SOES2012: an eight-day training course in geological mapping, usually in the UK
  4. SOES2002: a two-week course observing and recording data, usually in Spain
  5. SOES2015: an eight-day training course in geological mapping, usually in the UK
  6. SOES3005: a two-day field course in sedimentation
  7. SOES3018: a two-week course in Oceanography, collecting samples and data, usually in Plymouth
  8. SOES3021: an 8-day training course on geophysical instrumentation and interpretation of geophysical data
  9. SOES3024: a one-week mapping training class
  10. SOES3025: a one-week mapping training class and five-weeks independent field mapping
  11. SOES6003: a one-week course.

b. A number of units include a commitment to local fieldwork, usually one or two days at weekends.

MSc Oceanography

1. Programme Requirements

A BSc (Hons) degree (class 2.2 or above), or its equivalent, in an appropriate discipline (Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Geology, Geophysics, Mathematics, Physics) or an appropriate joint honours or interdisciplinary degree (such as Environmental Science). Occasionally, students are accepted with other degree subject areas, e.g. Engineering, Geography. All students are expected to be numerically competent and an A-level in Mathematics, or suitable undergraduate experience, is preferred.
