  1. The Council shall consist of the following members, namely:

    Class 1 : Officers

    1. The Chancellor and the Pro-Chancellors.
    2. The Vice-Chancellor, the Treasurer and the Deputy Vice-Chancellors.
    3. The Chair of Council and the Vice-Chair of Council if not otherwise members in this Class.

    Class 2 : Members Appointed by the Council

    Fifteen members to be appointed by the Council being neither employees nor officers of the University, of whom at least three shall be appointed from among the Graduates of the University after consultation with the University of Southampton Society.

    Class 3 : Members Appointed by the Senate

    Eight members of the Senate to be appointed by the Senate.

    Class 4 : Members of the Non-teaching Staff

    Two members of the full-time staff of the University other than Academic Staff to be appointed from amongst their own number by such means as the Council shall from time to time determine.

    Class 5 : Representatives of the Union of Students

    The President of the Union of Students and one other representative appointed annually by the Union of Students.

  2. The student members shall not participate in nor receive papers for any business affecting the appointment, promotion or personal affairs of individual members of the staff of the University or affecting the admission, academic assessment or personal affairs of individual students.

  3. Members of the Council included in Class 1 shall hold office while they occupy the positions named respectively.

  4. Members of the Council included in Classes 2, 3 and 4 shall hold office for three years or for such shorter period as the appointing Bodies may determine.

  5. Any casual vacancy amongst the appointed members of the Council shall be filled by the Body which made the appointment, provided that any person nominated to fill a casual vacancy shall be appointed only for the remainder of the period for which the person whose place has become vacant was appointed.

  6. Any of the appointed members of the Council in Classes 2, 3 or 4 who are absent from three consecutive ordinary meetings shall cease to be a member unless the Council otherwise decides.

  7. Any appointed member of the Council may resign at any time by writing addressed to the Secretary of the Council.
