Regulations Specific to Individual Postgraduate Programmes

1. Candidates may only register for the degree of Master of Science in the Social Sciences.
   
   
2. The programme shall be one of full-time study only.
   
   
3. A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in the taught component of the programme may take supplementary examinations as indicated in section 6 of the General Regulations for Master of Science in the Social Sciences and Postgraduate Diploma Programmes. A candidate who fails to reach the required standard following these examinations may, with the permission of the examiners, apply to transfer to the Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Citizenship and Democracy and be considered for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Citizenship and Democracy.

3. A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in the taught component of the programme may take supplementary examinations as indicated in section 6 of the General Regulations for Master of Science in the Social Sciences and Postgraduate Diploma Programmes. A candidate who fails to reach the required standard following these examinations may, with the permission of the examiners, apply to transfer to the Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Global Politics and be considered for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Global Politics.
   

1. A candidate must normally be a graduate of an approved university. A candidate who is not a graduate of an approved university may be admitted to the programme by the Board of the School of Social Sciences on the recommendation of the relevant Programme Director in Social Work Studies.
   
   
2. A candidate may be required to undertake a period of preliminary study and to pass examinations as specified by the relevant Programme Director in Social Work Studies before undertaking the scheme of study.
   

3. The scheme of study will comprise lectures, coursework and supervised field-work.
   
   
4. A candidate is required to undertake the scheme of study over a period of not less than four semesters of full-time study.
   

5. All components of the scheme of study will be assessed during and/or at the end of the period of study as specified by the programme concerned.
   
   
6. A candidate who passes all assessments, including designated field-work placements, and submits a dissertation which satisfies the examiners, shall be awarded the degree of Master of Science in the Social Sciences. The degree may be awarded with distinction.
   
   
7. A candidate who passes all assessments, including designated field-work placements, shall be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma of the University of Southampton (PGDipSoton).
   
   
8. A candidate who fails the assessment initially may, with the approval of the Board of the School of Social Sciences, be permitted to complete supplementary work and be assessed on such work. A candidate who completes the supplementary assessment satisfactorily will be entitled only to the award of the Postgraduate Diploma of the University of Southampton (PGDipSoton).
   

9. In cases where the behaviour of a student registered on this programme is considered to be unprofessional, damaging or dangerous to service users, other students or programme providers, or is considered to be unethical or creating unacceptable risk for themselves or others, a recommendation may be made for termination of programme in accordance with procedures set out in the relevant programme student handbook. This procedure may be invoked at any time during the programme when a student's behaviour has been called into question, including either during a practice placement or after practice has been completed, or at any time during the academic part of the programme.
   

1. Candidates will normally be graduates of an approved university, hold a CCETSW approved qualification and must have had a minimum of two years' post-qualification experience. Students with other qualifications acceptable to the Head of Teaching Programme may, with the approval of the School Board, be admitted to the programme. The Head of Teaching Programme may recommend to the School Board the admission of candidates without such qualifications where their prior learning has been accredited within the School APEL system. Exemption from parts of the programme may be granted where evidence of equivalent qualification is produced under the APEL scheme. Holders of the CCETSW award in Practice Teaching who possess an appropriate professional qualification may claim exemption from the Practice Teaching in Social Work component.
   

2. The taught Postgraduate Diploma will comprise a core component and one option specialist component. A candidate must complete the Postgraduate Diploma to a satisfactory level before being eligible for entry to the Master's phase of the programme. Students will complete the scheme of study over a period of not less than one year (full-time) and not more than three years (part-time). Each free-standing module may be taken as a continuing education course attracting appropriate credit rating at level M. Candidates who do not wish to be assessed may be be eligible for a certificate of attendance.
   

3. Assessment will be consistent with standard procedures of the School of Social Sciences and will be made up of coursework marks (including reports of practical work and written assignments) and a dissertation mark. All components of the scheme of study will be assessed during and/or at the end of the period of study. Percentage marks will be awarded according to the standard of work to fit the CATS scheme.
   
   A candidate who has qualified for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma at a satisfactory level may, with the approval of the Board of the School of Social Sciences, be permitted to undertake further study and research and to submit a dissertation.
   
   A candidate who has satisfied the examiners in the dissertation will forego the award of the Postgraduate Diploma and be awarded the degree of Master of Science in the Social Sciences. The degree may be awarded with distinction.
   
   A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in the dissertation may either be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma of the University of Southampton (PGDip.Soton) or be permitted by the Board of the School of Social Sciences, on the recommendation of the Head of Teaching Programme, to resubmit a dissertation in a bound form, normally within a period of six calendar months (full-time candidates) or twelve calendar months (part-time candidates). Qualified social work students may be eligible for the CCETSW Advanced Award on successful completion of the MSc course.
   

1. Candidates will normally be graduates of an approved university, hold a CCETSW approved qualification, and must have had a minimum of two years' post-qualification experience. Students with other qualifications acceptable to the Head of Teaching Programme may, with the approval of the School Board, be admitted to the programme. The Head of Teaching Programme may recommend to the School Board the admission of candidates without such qualifications where their prior learning has been accredited with the School APEL system.
   

2. The taught certificate comprises units of the relevant specialist option of the Diploma/MSc in Professional Studies. Students will complete the scheme of study over a period of not less than one year (full-time) and not more than two years (part-time). Candidates on the Certificate in Management of Voluntary Organisations (by distance learning) will complete the programme over not less than one year and not more than four years.

All components of the scheme of study will be assessed during and/or at the end of the period of study. Percentage marks will be awarded according to the standard of work to fit the CAT scheme.
   

1. A candidate must normally be a graduate of an approved university. A candidate who is not a graduate of an approved university may be admitted to a programme by the Board of the School of Social Sciences on the recommendation of the Head of Teaching Programme responsible for that programme.
   

2. The scheme of study will comprise lectures and other coursework. Provision may also be made for specialised study.
   
   
3. A candidate is required to undertake the scheme of study over a period of not less than two semesters of full-time study or four semesters of part-time study.
   

4. All components of the scheme of study will be examined during and/or at the end of the period of study, as specified by the School.
   
   
5. A candidate who fails initially to satisfy the examiners may, in exceptional circumstances, be permitted to take supplementary examinations at dates to be specified.
   

6. The Certificate will be awarded by Senate to a candidate who has satisfactorily completed the scheme of study and passed the examinations prescribed.
