Fieldwork Requirements

a. Residential field courses are held in association with the following modules:

  1. SOES1003: an introductory 7-day course (usually in the UK) and a 2-day course (usually in France).
  2. SOES2012/SOES2014: an 8-day training course in geological mapping (usually in the UK).
  3. SOES2022: a 14-day course observing and recording data (usually in Spain).
  4. SOES2017: a 7-day course in marine biology (Marine Biology programmes only) (usually in the UK).
  5. SOES3018: a 12-day course in Oceanography, collecting samples and data (usually in Falmouth).
  6. SOES3020: a 7-day course examining and interpreting volcanic successions (usually in Tenerife).
  7. SOES3021: an 8-day geophysical training course (usually in the UK or Europe).
  8. SOES3024/SOES3025: a 7-day mapping training class (usually in the UK).
  9. SOES3025: 5 weeks independent field mapping (usually in the UK or Europe).
  10. SOES6020: a 5-day course undertaking rocky intertidal fieldwork (usually in the UK).
  11. SOES6032: a 7-day course (usually in the UK).
  12. SOES6052: a 10-day tropical marine biology course planned to take place in Bermuda.

b. A number of modules include a commitment to local fieldwork and/or boatwork, which sometimes may be one or two days at weekends.


Exceptions/Additions to University Standard Progression Rules

The following approved programme specifications detail a variation to the University standard progression rules.

Master of Geology (with study in North America); Master of Geophysics (with study in North America)
Master of Oceanography (with study in North America)

A candidate enrolled on these programmes must achieve an average mark of 65% at the end of Parts 1 and 2.


Master of Geology; Master of Geophysics; Master of Oceanography
A candidate enrolled on these programmes must achieve an average mark of 55% at the end of Part 2.


Master of Marine Biology
A candidate enrolled on this programme must achieve a minimm mark of 50% in SOES1007.
A candidate enrolled on this programme must achieve an average of 60% at the end of Parts 1 and 2.


Master of Oceanography with French
In addition to the normal Faculty/University progression rules, a candidate enrolled on this programme must achieve a minimum mark of 55% in FREN9021.


BSc Marine Biology with Oceanography
A candidate enrolled on this programme must achieve a minimum mark of 40% in SOES1007.
