Programme Regulations

Biochemistry BSc

A-level: normally passes in two science subjects. If Chemistry is not offered at A-level then it must be offered at AS-level.

First year: four 15 cp core courses plus two 15 cp Chemistry courses and two further approved 15 cp courses.

Second Year: two 15 cp core courses and two 15 cp compulsory courses plus four further approved 15 cp courses.

Third Year: two compulsory 15 cp courses plus either two 15 cp library projects or a 30 cp laboratory project or a 15 cp library project and a 15 cp mini-laboratory project, plus four approved 15cp courses.



Biochemistry and Pharmacology BSc

A-level: normally passes in two science subjects. If Chemistry is not offered at A-level then it must be offered at AS-level.

First year: four 15 cp core courses plus two 15 cp Chemistry courses and two further approved 15 cp courses.

Second Year: four 15 cp core courses plus four further approved 15 cp courses.

Third Year: four compulsory 15 cp courses plus either two 15 cp library projects or a 30 cp laboratory project or a 15 cp library project and a 15 cp mini-laboratory project, and one further approved Biochemistry course and one further approved Pharmacology course.



Biology BSc

A-level : normally passes in Biology (or Zoology or Botany); preferably Chemistry (or Physical Science).
GCSE/O-level: Chemistry (if not offered at A or AS-level).

First Year: six compulsory 15 cp courses and normally one 15 cp Chemistry course if entering without A or AS-level Chemistry, plus either one or two further approved 15 cp course(s).

Second Year: two compulsory 15 cp courses plus six approved 15 cp courses.

Third Year: either two 15 cp library projects, or a 30 cp laboratory project, or a 15 cp library project and a 15 cp mini-laboratory project, plus a further six approved 15 cp courses.



Biology with Oceanography BSc

A-level : normally passes in Biology (or Zoology or Botany); Mathematics or Chemistry or any other physical science.
GCSE/O-level: Chemistry (if not offered at A or AS-level).

First Year: seven core/compulsory 15 cp courses and normally one 15 cp Chemistry course if entering without A or AS-level Chemistry, or one other approved 15 cp course.

Second Year: four core/compulsory 15 cp courses plus four approved 15 cp courses.

Third Year: either two 15 cp library projects, or a 30 cp laboratory project, or a 15 cp library project and a 15 cp mini-laboratory project, plus a further six approved 15 cp courses which will include two approved Oceanography courses.



Biomedical Sciences BSc

A-level : normally passes in two science subjects. If Chemistry is not offered at A-level then it must be offered at AS-level.

First Year: four core 15 cp courses plus two 15 cp Chemistry courses and two further approved 15 cp courses.

Second Year: four 15 cp courses of which two will be core and two compulsory, plus four other approved 15 cp courses.

Third Year: two compulsory 15 cp courses plus either two 15 cp library projects, or a 30 cp laboratory project, or a 15 cp library project and a 15 cp mini-laboratory project, plus a further four approved 15 cp courses.



Biomedical Sciences BSc (Intercalated)

Available only to students registered for the Bachelor of Medicine course at the University of Southampton who have successfully completed the Intermediate examination at the end of year 3 of the BM5 programme.

First Year: one compulsory 15 cp course plus seven further approved 15 cp courses.

Second Year: one compulsory extended project.



Master of Biomedical Sciences (MBiomedSci) (4 years)


A-level : normally passes in two science subjects. If Chemistry is not offered at A-level then it must be offered at AS-level.

First Year: four core 15 cp courses plus two 15 cp Chemistry courses and two further approved 15 cp courses.

Second Year: four 15 cp courses of which two will be core and two compulsory, plus four other approved 15 cp courses.

Third Year: two compulsory 15 cp courses plus a 30 cp core laboratory project and four optional 15 cp courses.

Fourth Year: one 60 cp laboratory project and two 15 cp library projects plus two additional 15 cp level 4 courses.



Nutritional Sciences BSc

A-level : normally passes in two science subjects. If Chemistry is not offered at A-level then it must be offered at AS-level.

First Year: four core 15 cp courses plus two 15 cp Chemistry courses and two further approved 15 cp courses.

Second Year: two core 15 cp courses, five compulsory 15 cp courses and one further approved 15 cp course.

Third Year: three compulsory 15 cp courses plus either two 15 cp library projects, or a 30 cp laboratory project, or a 15 cp library project and a 15 cp mini-laboratory project, plus a further three approved 15 cp courses.



Pharmacology BSc

A-level: normally passes in two science subjects. If Chemistry is not offered at A-level then it must be offered at AS-level.

First year: four 15 cp core courses plus two 15 cp Chemistry courses and two further approved 15 cp courses.

Second Year: two core 15 cp courses and four compulsory 15 cp courses plus two further approved 15 cp courses.

Third Year: two compulsory 15 cp courses plus either two 15 cp library projects or a 30 cp laboratory project or a 15 cp library project and a 15 cp mini-laboratory project, plus four further approved 15 cp courses.



Physiology BSc

Physiology with Psychology BSc

A-level: normally passes in two science subjects. If Chemistry is not offered at A-level then it must be offered at AS-level.

First year: six 15 cp core courses, one 15 cp compulsory course and one further approved 15 cp course.

Second Year: four core 15 cp courses, two compulsory 15 cp courses and a further two approved 15 cp courses.

Third Year: three compulsory 15 cp courses plus either two 15 cp library projects or a 30 cp laboratory project or a 15 cp library project and a 15 cp mini-laboratory project, plus three further approved 15 cp courses including one approved 15 cp Psychology unit.



Zoology BSc

A-level : normally passes in Biology (or Zoology); preferably Chemistry (or Physical Science).
GCSE/O-level: Chemistry (if not offered at A or AS-level).

First Year: six compulsory 15 cp courses and normally one 15 cp Chemistry course if entering without A or AS-level Chemistry, plus either one or two further approved 15 cp course(s).

Second Year: two compulsory 15 cp courses plus six approved 15 cp courses.
