  1. The Court shall consist of the following persons, namely:

    Class 1 : The Representatives of the University

    1. The Members of the Council.

    2. The Deans of the Faculties.

    3. The Heads of Schools and the Directors of such research institutes and centres as may be designated for the purprose by the Council.

    4. The Director, the Head of the NERC Strategic Research Division and the Head of the Underwater Systems Laboratory of the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton

    5. The Registrar and Chief Operating Officer

    6. The Director of Information Systems Services, the University Librarian, and the Director of Student Services.

    7. Not more than ten representatives, being graduates of the University, appointed by the University of Southampton Society.

    8. Not more than ten representatives of the Union of Students appointed by the Union.

    9. Such other representatives of the University, not exceeding ten in number, as the Council may appoint from time to time.

    Class 2 : Life Members

    Such persons, not exceeding twenty in number, as may be appointed to life membership by the Council.

    Class 3 : Representatives Appointed by Public Authorities

    1. Four representatives appointed by the Council of the County of Hampshire.

    2. Two representatives appointed by each of the Councils of the Counties of Dorset, West Sussex, Wiltshire and the Isle of Wight.

    3. Four representatives appointed by the Council of the City of Southampton.

    4. Two representatives appointed by each of the Councils of the Cities of Portsmouth and Winchester and the Borough of Bournemouth.

    5. Two representatives appointed by each of the Councils of the Borough of Eastleigh and the Test Valley.

    6. Representatives, not exceeding five in number, appointed by such other Public Authorities in the five Counties as the Council may from time to time determine.

    Class 4 : Representatives of Religious Bodies and Organisations

    Representatives, not exceeding ten in number, appointed by such Religious Bodies and Organisations in the five Counties as may be determined by the Council.

    Class 5 : Members of the United Kingdom and European Parliaments

    1. The Members of the Commons House of Parliament elected for the several divisions of the City of Southampton, for the City of Winchester and the Boroughs of Eastleigh and Romsey.

    2. Such other Members of the Commons House of Parliament not exceeding ten in number, elected for those constituencies in the five Counties as may be determined by the Council.

    3. Such Members of the European Parliament elected for those constituencies wholly or partly within the five Counties as may be determined by the Council.

    Class 6 : Ex-Officio Members

    1. The Lord-Lieutenants of the five Counties.

    2. The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, the Mayor of Southampton, the Mayor of Bournemouth, the Mayor of Winchester.

    3. The Chairmen of the Councils of the five Counties.

    4. The Chief Executive of the Council of the County of Hampshire.

    5. The Chief Executive of the Council of the City of Southampton.

    6. The Chief Executive of the Council of the City of Winchester.

    Class 7 : Representatives of Institutions of Advanced or Further Education

    One representative appointed by such Colleges and Institutes of Advanced or Further Education in the five Counties, not exceeding twenty in number, as may be determined by the Council.

    Class 8 : Representatives of Colleges and Schools

    1. The Head Teachers of such Colleges and Schools in the five Counties, not exceeding ten in number, as may be appointed by the Council.

    2. Such other representatives of teachers in Colleges and Schools in the five Counties, not exceeding ten in number, as may be appointed by the Council.

    Class 9 : Representatives of Societies and Other Bodies

    One representative of each of such Chambers of Commerce Societies and Trades Councils and of such other bodies as the Council may from time to time determine, not exceeding twenty in number.

    Class 10 : Other Persons

    1. Three persons to be nominated by the President of Her Majesty's Privy Council.

    2. Such other persons, not exceeding twenty in number, as may be appointed by the Council.

  2. Subject to these Statutes, all nominated and appointed members of the Court shall hold office for three years or until the appointment of their successors except that Representatives of the University Class 1 (h) shall hold office for one year only.

  3. All retiring members may be renominated or re-appointed.

  4. Any casual vacancy amongst the nominated or appointed members shall be filled as soon as convenient by the person or Body which appointed the member whose place has become vacant, and the appointee to a casual vacancy shall hold office for the residue of the term for which the representative in whose place he or she is appointed was a member.

  5. Except where otherwise provided representatives need not be members of the Body by which they are nominated or appointed.

  6. Any life member, or nominated or appointed member of the Court may resign by writing addressed to the Secretary of the Court.
