1.1 Appointment of the Chancellor
     
 
  1. The Chancellor of the University shall be appointed (or re-appointed) by the Court on the nomination of the Council. The Council shall not make any nomination (or re-nomination) without having considered a report from the Nominations Committee of Council and after consultation with the Senate.

  2. The Chancellor shall be appointed for a term of five years and be eligible for re-appointment, but shall not normally hold office for periods in excess of ten years.
1.2 Appointment of the Pro-Chancellors
     
  The Pro-Chancellors of the University shall be appointed (or reappointed) by the Council after consideration of a recommendation from the Nominations Committee of Council. The Council shall not approve any initial appointment recommended by this committee until the Senate has been given the opportunity to comment on it. The Chair of Council will normally be nominated as a Pro-Chancellor.
     
1.3 The Deputy Vice-Chancellors
     
 
  1. The Deputy Vice-Chancellors shall be appointed by the Council, on the nomination of the Vice-Chancellor after consultation with the Senate, from among the Professors and University Directors of Education. Where such an appointment is not made, an appropriately qualified external candidate may be appointed, following external advertisement and open competition. The Vice-Chancellor shall, before making a nomination, seek the advice of six senior members of the University drawn from the members of Senate and Council.

  2. The arrangements for the tenure of office by the Deputy Vice-Chancellors shall be: an initial appointment for a normal period of five years (which shall be subject to confirmation by the Vice-Chancellor by the end of the first year), with the possibility of reappointment for a second period of one, two or three further years.

  3. Of the Deputy Vice-Chancellors one shall be designated as the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor. The Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor shall act on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor during his or her absence from the University. In the absence of the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor the Vice-Chancellor may designate one of the Deputy Vice-Chancellors or Pro Vice-Chancellors to act on his or her behalf.

  4. The Deputy Vice-Chancellors shall assist the Vice-Chancellor in such matters as the Vice-Chancellor may from time to time decide.
     
1.3a The Pro Vice-Chancellors
     
 
  1. The Pro Vice-Chancellors shall be appointed by the Council, on the nomination of the Vice-Chancellor after consultation with the Senate, from among the Professors and University Directors of Education. Where such an appointment is not made, an appropriately qualified external candidate may be appointed, following external advertisement and open competition. The Vice-Chancellor shall, before making a nomination, seek the advice of six senior members of the University drawn from the members of Senate and Council.

  3. The Pro Vice-Chancellors shall assist the Vice-Chancellor in such matters as the Vice-Chancellor may from time to time decide.
     
1.4 The Deans of the Faculties
     
 
  1. The Dean of each Faculty shall be appointed by the Council on the nomination of the Vice-Chancellor, following consultation with the Senate, from among the Professors and Directors of Education of the Faculty. Where such an appointment is not made an appropriately qualified external candidate may be appointed following external advertisement and open competition. The Vice-Chancellor shall before making a nomination seek the advice of members of the Faculty.

  2. The arrangement for the tenure of office by the Dean shall be: for a normal period of five years (which shall be subject to confirmation by the Vice-Chancellor by the end of the first year), with the possibility of reappointment for a second period of one, two or three further years.

  3. If the office of Dean becomes vacant before expiry of the period prescribed by the Council, arrangements shall be put in hand to appoint a new Dean in accordance with these provisions.

  4. During any such vacancy and pending the appointment of a new Dean, the Vice-Chancellor may appoint an acting Dean from among the Academic Staff of the Faculty.
     
1.5 Associate Deans of the Faculties
     
 
  1. The Dean of each Faculty shall designate two or more members of the Academic Staff in the Faculty to act as Associate Dean, not to exceed 1.5 FTE.

  2. Each Associate Dean shall normally serve for a period or periods not exceeding five years (which shall be subject to confirmation by the Dean of the Faculty by the end of the first year), and shall undertake such duties as shall be determined by the Dean.
     
1.6 The Heads of the Schools
     
  Except where special arrangements are determined for those Heads of Schools appointed following consideration by a joint committee of the Council and the Senate, the Heads of Schools shall be appointed for a period not exceeding five years at a time: provided always that for what the Vice-Chancellor shall deem sufficient cause notice in writing of early termination of a period of office may be given to an individual Head of School.
