1. The Deputy Vice-Chancellors shall be appointed by the Council on the nomination of the Vice-Chancellor following consultation with the Senate, from among the Professors of the University and University Directors of Education. Where such an appointment is not made, an appropriately qualified external candidate may be appointed, following external advertisement and open competition.
   
   
2. The Deputy Vice-Chancellors shall hold office for such periods and (subject to Section 31) upon such conditions as shall from time to time be prescribed by Ordinance.
   
   
3. Of the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, one shall be designated as the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and shall act on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor during his or her absence from the University.
