  1. The University reserves the right at any time to revise its published scales of fees and charges whether in respect of new entrants or of students already on their programme.

  2. The fee for any particular programme will be notified on application to the Director of Student Administration and Registry.

  3. Fees for a session (or part of a session) are payable for the course in two instalments according to residence status. See undergraduate or postgraduate for further details on how to pay your fees. All other fees, charges and sums payable to the University are to be paid in full within seven days of the date of the invoice.

  4. No person shall be awarded a degree, diploma or certificate unless he or she has paid the fees prescribed and any other sums due to the University. (Ordinance 7.4.5).

  5. Students in difficulties over settling their debts to the University are urged to discuss them with Student Fees at the earliest opportunity.
Fees 2008/09

  1. The fees quoted in 'Money Matters', except where otherwise stated, are sessional fees for 2008/09, inclusive of all charges for matriculation, enrolment, tuition, examination, graduation and where applicable, Students' Union subscription but not fees for re-examination. Enrolment with the University leads automatically to a liability for fees. A student who for any reason withdraws during the session will be entitled to a refund calculated on a pro rata basis: see Tuition Fees Refund Policy. The fees applicable to visiting students and to students pursuing programmes in the affiliated institutions are given in the appropriate sections below.

  2. Fees charged to full-time overseas students (excluding EU students) cover the full cost of tuition, examinations, membership of the Students' Union and, for research students, research support expenses. The University does not normally charge additional bench fees to overseas students who pay the inclusive fee. Part-time overseas students will be charged at 50% of full-time programmes.

  3. Students attending programmes but not seeking a qualification of the University will be charged fees to be determined in each case by the Director of Student Administration and Registry but the following guidelines will apply:

    1. Full-time attendance: UK or overseas full-time fee appropriate to programme.
    2. Part-time attendance: UK or overseas part-time fee appropriate to the programme.

All Students

The following fees regulations apply to all students, as appropriate.
  1. Undergraduate Programmes

    1. Re-examination Fees:
      £20
      per re-examination for each paper taken on a second or subsequent occasion (to a maximum of £100 for five or more re-examinations within one academic year).

    2. An administration fee of £415 will be charged to any candidate retaking any examination papers in a centre other than the University of Southampton. This fee is in addition to any fee applicable under (a), above.

    3. All students spending a period of study abroad as part of their programme are required to pay the standard sessional fee in respect of that period.

  2. Research and Instructional Programmes

    1. Nominal writing up fee: (single payment due six months after transfer - within this time) £100

    2. In addition to the appropriate sessional fee the University may charge a research support fee not exceeding £1450 per annum: (UK/EU only; fees for overseas research students are normally inclusive of support fees.)

    3. Re-examination fees instructional programmes:
      £20 per re-examination for each paper taken on a second or subsequent occasion (to a maximum of £100 for five or more re-examinations within one academic year).

    4. An administration fee of £415 will be charged to any instructional programme candidate retaking any examination papers in a centre other than the University of Southampton. This fee is in addition to any fee applicable under (c), above.

    5. Examination fee for DM: £1,500.

    6. Fee for re-submission of thesis or published works (all candidates):
      MPhil : £160
      PhD : £180
      DM : £310

    7. A student beginning a research programme in mid-session shall pay fees pro rata for each calendar month of candidature until the 30 September next following, part of a month counting as a full month.

    8. Higher Doctorates:
      Examination fee for DLitt, DMus, DSc, DSc(Social Sciences), LLD (external candidates): £2000 / (staff candidates): £600

  3. Transcripts, Certificates and Award Letters:

    In accordance with the policy set out in 'Examinations, Transcripts and Certificates, point 12', the agreed Scale of Fees for the academic year 2008-09 is as follows:

    (i) 1 certificate of attendance/registration per term No charge
    (ii) 1 typewritten confirmation of an award No charge
    (iii) 1 transcript (with grade or marks) provided to the student or sent to another University per year No charge
    (iv) Subsequent certificates of attendance/registration in the same term £10.00
    (v) Subsequent typewritten confirmation of an award£10.00
    (vi) Subsequent transcripts £10.00 each or 10 for £50.00
    (vii) Certified copies of degree certificates £25.00
    (viii) Replacement of award certificate £25.00

  1. If payment of programme fees is not received in accordance with the fees policy (undergraduate or postgraduate) the Director of Finance will inform the Director of Student Administration and Registry. The students concerned will be liable to termination of programme with effect from the end of the current term and/or they may be refused examination in accordance with Ordinance No. 7.3.5.

  2. If payment of any other debt is not received by the due date the Director of Finance may, at his discretion, remove Library and Computing facilities and/or refer the total debt outstanding to the University's external debt collection agents for recovery. The student concerned will be liable for any charges arising from the referral including the costs of any court action. The current referral costs are:

    10% plus VAT for UK Residence Status Students
    18% plus VAT for Overseas, EU and Channel Island Residence Status Students .

  3. Students who are expecting to continue on course into the next session but who have a debt to the University outstanding on 31 July may not be permitted to sit examinations (if any) in the following September and will not be permitted to enrol for the following session while their debt remains outstanding. Enrolment will only be granted upon receipt of cleared funds. The programme of such a student will thus effectively be terminated if the debt remains unpaid.
Fees for Programmes at Accredited and Affiliated Institutions
  1. Please refer to the individual colleges for details of tuition fees.
Other Fees and Expenses

The following information does not apply to students following programmes in affiliated institutions.

Students are responsible for meeting the cost of essential textbooks, and of producing such essays, assignments, laboratory reports and dissertations as are required to fulfil the academic requirements for each programme of study. Some Schools will make a nominal charge for the provision of essential supplementary material and study guides.

In addition to charging Tuition Fees, as appropriate, the University, under the terms of Section 28 of the Teaching and Higher Education Act 1998, may levy a number of supplementary charges, as listed below.

  1. Laboratory Deposits
    At the beginning of their programme, postgraduate students in the School of Chemistry are required to pay a deposit not exceeding £30. This deposit is repaid, less any deductions, during the last two weeks of the programme. Deductions from the deposit may be made in respect of practical work, local fieldwork and other similar items of expenditure.

  2. Hire of Lockers
    A limited number of lockers are available within Schools for use by students, who are required to pay a deposit at the beginning of the session. Keys must be returned at the end of each session and upon the return of the key the deposit is refunded to the student.

  3. Additional Expenses: Undergraduate Programmes

    1. The regulations for some first-degree programmes prescribe study programmes, excavations, field trips or visits which may take place in term-time or in vacation and may involve residence abroad, and the payment of a contribution towards the associated costs.

    2. The regulations for single and combined honours in the Modern Languages prescribe varying periods of residence abroad.

    3. Students taking certain first-degree or certificate programmes are required to meet the cost of preparing and typing their dissertations or reports (approx. cost £60).

    4. The University has an approved calculator, which has been over-stamped on the back with the University's dolphin logo, for use in those examinations where a calculator is permitted. This scheme is being phased in from October 2002, and in its first year of operation applies to all new Undergraduate students taking Year 1 examinations. It also applies to continuing students who are taking any Year 1 examinations, as well as to those on postgraduate taught programmes. The approved calculator must be purchased from the Student Union Shop on the Highfield campus, or from the shop at New College. The cost will be no more than £10. Please note that a calculator of the same model but without the dolphin logo is not acceptable for use in the examination room.

    5. All students in the Faculty of Engineering, Science and Mathematics may be required to obtain drawing instruments, drawing paper, computer disks, certain items of protective clothing and electronic calculators (approx. cost £90).

    6. All students studying Civil and Environmental Engineering are required to pay £180 towards the cost of the survey field programme.

    7. All students taking Electronics, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electro-mechanical Engineering may be required to equip themselves with tool sets (approx. cost £40).

    8. All students studying Medicine are required to equip themselves with a number of instruments (approximate cost £150); and to pay £20 on annual enrolment in Year 1 to cover the cost of locker keys (£5 returnable on return of locker keys in Year 2).

    9. Students at School of Art are charged an annual 'studio fee' (maximum £120).

    10. Students taking Ocean and Earth Sciences may be required to obtain basic field equipment and contribute to the costs of field and laboratory materials.

    11. Students taking Social Work Studies may have to contribute to the cost of travel to practical placements.

    12. Students taking English are required to pay an annual fee for photocopying of reading materials.

    13. All students studying Physiotherapy are required to equip themselves with a number of instruments (approx. cost £80).

  4. Additional Expenses: Postgraduate Programmes

    1. All students taking the MSc programme in Oceanography must meet the cost of protective clothing and fees for visits to marine stations and institutions.

    2. Students taking postgraduate instructional programmes are usually required to submit typed and bound dissertations (approx. cost £150).

    3. The University has an approved calculator, which has been over-stamped on the back with the University's dolphin logo, for use in those examinations where a calculator is permitted.     4. Students studying for higher degrees by research will incur costs for the typing and binding of their theses. These costs may be considerable and will vary according to the nature and the length of the work.
Hall Fee Regulations
  1. Fees Due

    1. Fee liability becomes due once a place has been accepted.

    2. Students wishing to leave Hall will be financially liable for the full period of the contract unless an appropriate replacement can be found by the Accommodation Office or Halls management. Where no appropriate replacement is found, a student wishing to leave Hall who feels that, due to unforeseen exceptional circumstances, severe hardship will result from their continuing liability for the full duration of their Residence Agreement, he/she may write to the Hall Manager of their Hall requesting to be released from such liability ("the Request") detailing how such circumstances have arisen, and including any evidence as may be appropriate in support of their case. The Hall Manager will, based on this evidence and after consultation with the Warden and the Accommodation Officer, make a recommendation to release the student or not, subject to ratification and appeals as set out in the Residence Handbook.

    3. When a student withdraws or suspends from a programme, hall fees are due for 7 days from the date the student vacates his/her place unless 7 days' notice has previously been received.

    4. Full fees are due if a place for the start of session is cancelled less than 10 working days before the start of that session.

    5. A pre-payment deposit of £350 is required a first year postgraduate students. This is deducted from the final instalment of hall fees.

NB: 4 Halls require the purchase of electricity top-up cards for additional power used. A discount of £2.00 per week is given for these Halls. Shaftesbury Avenue requires the purchase of utilities.

  • The fee levels quoted above are for your guidance only.

  • Preferences will be considered as far as possible; where alternatives are offered every effort will be made to attempt to ensure that, where possible, the type of accommodation and the fee level are comparable to those of your preferred option.

  • Students accommodated in single rooms without washbasins have access to a shared washbasin facility and to the communal bathrooms shared by all students.

  • Rooms vary in size from Hall to Hall.

  • Fees include the cleaning of communal areas only unless otherwise specified. Fees for self-contained flats do not include cleaning.

  • Students should note that a room in a University Hall of Residence entitles the resident to the Uni-link transport package which includes bus travel and free access to bicycle storage at most Halls of Residence and teaching sites.

  • Students should note that, where available, data connection is included at no additional cost. Data connection is not available at Shaftesbury Avenue.

  • Students should note that all University Residences are located in Southampton except Erasmus Park which is located in Winchester. The contract length at Erasmus Park is given for guidance only.

  • Catering is not provided in Hall on Bank Holidays.

  • Some larger rooms may be offered on a twinned room basis for a maximum of 6 weeks at the start of session. The cost for these rooms will be the equivalent of 50% of the single occupancy rate. This rate excludes the catering element for catered halls, and for the Uni-link transport package, data connection and JCR fee which will be charged at full cost to both residents in both catered and self-catered halls.
