Regulations for the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice

  1. The Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice is awarded by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board of the School of Education, to candidates who have satisfactorily completed an approved programme of study and have satisfied the assessment requirements.

  2. The programme shall extend over the equivalent of one year of part-time study. Candidates successfully completing Module 1 may postpone entry to Module 2 for a period of not more than two years.

  3. The programme is designed to form an intergral part of the probationary programme of the University's academic staff, and entry to the programme is prioritised for this group of staff.

  4. Applicants for admission must hold a degree awarded by an approved University, or have other qualifications approved by the School Board on the recommendation of the Head of School.

  5. Normally candidates must be engaged in at least 20 hours of teaching activities as part of their normal professional duties during each module.

  6. Candidates are required to be supported in their studies by an approved work-based mentor.

  7. Assessment will take place at the end of each module. Certificates will be awarded annually, normally at the end of the academic year.

  8. Assessment shall be based on the assessment of a prescribed number of assignments submitted during or at the end of each module.

  9. A list shall be issued showing the names of the successful candidates arranged in alphabetical order.

  10. Subject to the approval of the School Board, candidates who have been unsuccessful in passing either of their module assessments may re-submit their work on one occasion only.

  11. Candidates can submit their assignments for any of the deadline dates which will be published annually. It is the responsibility of the candidates to ensure they complete the modules in time for any probationary requirements.

  12. Extensions for the submission of assessed work of up to two weeks may be approved by the Programme Leader. Extensions of over two weeks but less than six months must be approved by the Head of School. All requests for extensions must be accompanied by supporting evidence.
