Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.

Except where an opt-out has been granted by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.

1. Admissions
 
In addition to the normal academic entry requirements for a Masters degree, applicants should preferably also have work experience in a relevant field.

Where modules completed by a candidate at other places of learning are considered to be equivalent to a relevant module of the programme (in accordance with the University's regulations on credit transfer) the University may permit such a candidate to qualify for the degree by following such a programme of study and completing such examinations as it shall specify.

The University's Equal Opportunities policy states that no person will be discriminated against on any grounds which are not relevant to their academic ability. All reasonable efforts will be made to ensure that no prospective or existing student is treated less favourably on the grounds of age, race, colour, nationality, ethnic origin, creed, disability, HIV status, sexual orientation, gender, marital or parental/carer status, political belief or social or economic class, or any other type of discrimination.

Disabled applicants will be treated according to the same procedures as any other applicant with the additional involvement of Enabling Services to assess their needs.


2. Structure of Programme(s)
 
The programme is studied full-time over 18 months and consists of three semesters of full-time study and a dissertation. The first 17 weeks of the programme are delivered at Southampton, the following 19 weeks at Lund and the remaining 42 weeks at ITC, a period that includes the modules given by the University of Warsaw and fieldwork in Poland.

The programme consists of 14 modules and a dissertation.

3. Progression
 
To progress from Semester 1 (Southampton) to Semester 2 (Lund) students must achieve a minimum ECTS grade of E (ie: a pass) in all assessed modules.

To progress from Semester 2 (Lund) to Semester 3 (ITC) students must achieve a minimum ECTS grade of E in all assessed modules.

To progress from Semester 3 (ITC and Warsaw) to the Dissertation students must achieve a minimum ECTS grade of E in all assessed modules.


4. Assessment
 
As per the University regulations.


5. Award of Qualification(s)
 

To be awarded the MSc students must have successfully passed all modules at grade A to E under the ECTS scheme.

To be awarded the MSc with Distinction (Southampton and ITC) students must have:

  • successfully passed all assessed modules at grade A to E under the ECTS scheme;
  • passed at least 50% of assessed modules at grade A;
  • passed no more than 30% of assessed modules at grades D or E (excluding modules 1 and 2);
  • achieved grade A for the thesis.
If at the end of Semester 1 for any reason a student does not progress to Lund University a Postgraduate Certificate in Geo-information Science and Earth Observation for Environmental Modelling and Management may be awarded if the following requirements are met:
  • achievement of 60 credit points under the UK credit scheme;
  • achievement of an aggregate of 40% overall.
Publication of results for Part 1 will occur at 2.00pm on the Friday following the relevant Board of Examiners meeting; publication of results for the remaining parts of the programme are the responsibility of the relevant partner institution.

Publication of results for will occur at 2.00pm on the Friday following the relevant Board of Examiners meeting or as otherwise indicated in the University Almanac.

The final award is awarded by Senate on the recommendation of the School to candidates who have satisfactorily completed an approved programme of study and have satisfied the assessment requirements.

6. Placements/Study Abroad/Exchange/Fieldwork
 
Not applicable.


7. Other
 
These regulations may be revised during the student's period of registration in accordance with the procedures approved by Senate.

In addition, while in Southampton the following regulation applies:

Candidates are required to satisfy the academic and attendance requirements of the programme as laid out in the Programme Specification and the Student Handbook for the programme. Those failing to do so may have their course terminated.
