Instrument of Accreditation
The institutions accredited by the University are:

The University of Chichester1
The University of Winchester2

These institutions are accredited by the University to offer research degree programmes leading to University of Southampton qualifications under arrangements governed by the Accreditation Handbook and under the aegis of the University of Southampton's External Research Degrees Committee (ERDC) which reports to Senate through the Academic Quality and Standards Committee. Such awards are governed by the Regulations for the degrees of Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy as set out in Section V of the University Calendar.

1 West Sussex Institute of Higher Education (subsequently Chichester Institute of Higher Education) was accredited by the University of Southampton with effect from 1 August 1992 to offer taught courses leading to University of Southampton qualifications under arrangements governed by an Instrument of Accreditation. In1997 the College was accredited to offer research degrees leading to University of Southampton awards under arrangements governed by the Accreditation Handbook. In 1999 the Institute gained taught degree awarding powers and was awarded University status in 2005, taking the title the University of Chichester. The University of Southampton ceased accrediting taught programmes at the University of Chichester in 2005. Research degrees at the University of Chichester continue to be accredited by the University of Southampton.

2 King Alfred’s College Winchester was accredited by the University of Southampton with effect from 1 August 1992 to offer taught courses leading to University of Southampton qualifications under arrangements governed by an Instrument of Accreditation. In 1992 the College was accredited to offer research degrees leading to University of Southampton awards under arrangements governed by the Accreditation Handbook. The College gained taught degree awarding powers in July 2003 and was awarded University status in 2005, taking the title the University of Winchester. The University of Southampton ceased accrediting taught programmes at the University of Winchester at the end of the academic year 2007-08. The University of Winchester was granted research degree awarding powers on 15 August 2008. Research degrees from the University of Southampton will cease to be awarded at the University of Winchester once all students enrolled on programmes leading to the award of the degree of Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Southampton have completed their programmes, withdrawn from candidature, or opted to continue their study on a programme leading to a University of Winchester award. At thispoint the University of Winchester will be removed from the list of Accredited Institutions of the University of Southampton.
