Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.

Except where an opt-out has been granted by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.

1. Admissions

Note: See the individual Programme Regulations for the exceptions to the following:
  1. A candidate must normally be a graduate; a candidate who is not may be admitted to a programme on the approval of Social Sciences.

  2. A candidate may be required to undertake a period of preliminary study and to pass examinations as specified by the teaching programme concerned before undertaking the scheme of study.

  3. Satisfy the programme requirements appertaining to the relevant degree as specified in the programme specifications.
In line with the University’s Equal Opportunities Policy, individuals are treated on their relevant merits and abilities and are given equal opportunities within the module, Faculty and University. The aim of the policy is to ensure that no prospective or current student should receive any less favourable treatment on any grounds which are not relevant to academic ability and attainment. Every effort is made to ensure that disabled students are aware of and assisted in making use of the support provided by the University; to ensure access to lectures, classes, learning materials; and to ensure that where necessary appropriate variations to normal examining arrangements are made.

2. Structure of Programme(s)

  1. The scheme of study will comprise lectures and other coursework. Provision may also be made for specialised study and options within the scheme of study.

  2. A module is a self-contained part of a programme of study. Each module will have its own aims and objectives, syllabus and assessment requirements. Modules will normally be assessed during and/or at the end of the semester in which the student takes the module.

  3. A candidate is required to undertake the scheme of study over a period of not less than two semesters of full-time study or four semesters of part-time study (see individual programmes for exceptions where full-time study only is offered or where Postgraduate Certificate is offered).

3. Progression

  1. All components of the scheme of study will be examined during and/or at the end of the period of study as specified by the Faculty.

  2. A candidate who fails initially to satisfy the examiners will normally be permitted to take referred examinations at dates to be specified by the Faculty and, if successful at the appropriate level, be allowed eligibility to proceed to a Master's degree. Students who pass first time at Postgraduate Diploma only level are allowed to retake examinations and, if successful at the appropriate level, will be allowed eligibility to proceed to the Master's degree.
An exception to the published progression rules is in force for the MSc (SocSci) Social Work practice learning opportunity.

4. Assessment

The performance of candidates shall be assessed by the Board of Examiners in accordance with the Faculty’s regulations governing examinations for the relevant programme(s) of study.
