Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.

Except where an opt-out has been granted by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.


1. Admissions
 
1.1 Entry requirements
Candidates for entry to the course must normally possess a degree of an approved University in an appropriate specialism.
1.2 Equal opportunities
In line with the University’s Equal Opportunities Policy, individuals are treated on their relevant merits and abilities and are given equal opportunities within the module, School and University. The aim of the policy is to ensure that no prospective student or current student should receive any less favourable treatment on any grounds which are not relevant to academic ability and attainment. Every effort is made to ensure that disabled students are aware of and assisted in making use of the support provided by the University; to ensure access to lectures, classes, learning materials; and to ensure that where necessary appropriate variations to normal examining arrangements are made.


2. Structure of Programme(s)
 
2.1 The MPhil (Res Meth) is recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for the ‘1 + 3’ in the Doctoral Training Centre Education Pathways; there are two pathways. The programme comprises twelve taught modules and a dissertation. For the Quantitative Research Methods in Educational Research pathway the 12 modules are specified. For the Mixed Methods in Educational Research pathway there are 5 compulsory modules and 7 electives.
2.2 The programme is offered full-time or part-time. Students are required to undertake the study over a period of not less than one year and not more than three years' full-time study, or not less than two years and not more than five years' part-time study.


3. Progression
 
After having obtained the award, students may transfer to the second year of the EdD programme provided they have satisfactorily completed the core modules of the first year MPhil which are common to both programmes.


4. Assessment
 
Candidates are required to complete successfully:
  1. specified assessed coursework in appropriate modules (coursework assignments will total 30,000 words);
  2. an oral examination.
Candidates who successfully complete all coursework are eligible to submit a dissertation of approximately 20,000 words.

Candidates who fail the dissertation may, with the approval of the School, resubmit a dissertation on one occasion only by a date specified by the School.


5. Award of Qualification(s)
 
The Programmes follow the University Regulations for the Progression, Determination and Classification of Results specified in Section IV of the University Calendar.


6. Placements/Study Abroad/Exchange/Fieldwork
 
Not applicable.


7. Other
 
These regulations may be revised during the student's period of registration in accordance with the procedures approved by Senate.

Students should comply with the University's regulations on attendance and all timetabled sessions are required lectures and classes
