Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.

Except where an opt-out has been granted by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.

1. Admissions

The Programmes follow the University Regulations for Admission to Degree Programmes specified in Section IV of the University Calendar, as a four year integrated Master's degree leading to the award of a Master's degree. Specific entry criteria are detailed in the programme specification.

2. Structure of Programme(s)

The Programmes follow the University Regulations for Admission to Degree Programmes specified in Section IV of the University Calendar, as a four year integrated Master's degree leading to the award of a Master's degree.

Students on taught programmes are required to register for the correct number of credit points and modules as specified in the Programme Specification. Programmes in Modern Languages are offered in full-time and part-time mode, although the part-time route is generally considered more suitable for those only studying one language.

Full-time mode for the Integrated Master of Languages requires four years of study, with year three spent at a partner university in a country where one of the languages studied is spoken. A second period of residence abroad of up to three months in a second country is strongly recommended when more than one language is being studied. Part-time mode requires completion in five to eight years and likewise normally includes one or two significant periods spent abroad.

The programme structure is based on students completing 120 credits (60 ECTS) for each of parts one, two and three, and 150 credits (75 ECTS) in the final year.

Students are required to accumulate the required credits as detailed in the Programme Specification to progress. Any student successfully completing a Part of a programme who, for any reason, does not wish to proceed may be eligible to receive an exit award as detailed in the Programme Specification. The programme Master's level study is considered under the Regulations for Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Undergraduate and Integrated Masters Programmes. It consists of modules offered within the Faculty of Humanities and from other faculties.

See Section IV of the University Calendar for further details of the Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS) Regulations.

The Faculty may specify for each degree course certain modules which candidates for that degree course are required to take or complete succcessfully in each year. Apart from the specified modules (if any) the choice of modules shall be subject in all cases to programme approval.

3. Progression

The programmes shall follow the University Regulations for Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Undergraduate and Integrated Masters Programmes specified in Section IV of the University Calendar.

In order to progress to the next part of the programme, students will need to attain an overall aggregate mark of 55% in Part II and 50% in Part III.

If candidates have not attended the required lectures, seminars, classes or laboratory practicals, and have not completed the prescribed work for a degree course, the Examining Board will have the discretion to mark or not to mark the scripts.

With the permission of the Faculty candidates may transfer from one degree course to another not later than the end of the second semester of their course. In exceptional circumstances a transfer may be permitted at a later stage.

4. Assessment

The programmes shall follow the University Regulations for Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Undergraduate and Integrated Masters Programmes specified in Section IV of the University Calendar.

The performance of candidates shall be assessed by the Board of Examiners in accordance with the University’s regulations governing examinations for the relevant programme(s) of study.

5. Award of Qualification(s)

The programmes shall follow the University Regulations for Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Undergraduate and Integrated Masters Programmes specified in Section IV of the University Calendar.

6. Placements/Study Abroad/Exchange/Fieldwork

Undertaking a study abroad element is a compulsory element to the programme and is detailed in the Programme Specification.

7. Other

These regulations may be revised during the student's period of registration in accordance with the procedures approved by Senate.

Students' attendance will be monitored and repeated non-attendance may result in termination of studies.
