Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.

Except where an opt-out has been granted by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.

1. Admissions
 
1.1 Students:
  1. must satisfy the Regulations for Admission to Degree Programmes as specified in Section IV of the University Calendar;

  2. must satisfy the necessary programme requirements as set out in the programme specification and outlined below.
1.2 The normal requirement for entry to all programmes is a good first degree (First or Upper Second class) or equivalent in a relevant subject of an approved university or institution of higher education. Applicants will need a 2.1 in all statistics modules taken and preferably will have some knowledge of SPSS.
1.3 Students may apply for exemption from up to 40 credits of taught modules on the basis of prior certificated learning (APL) at Masters (M) level. The acceptance of such credit towards the award of a qualification shall be at the discretion of the Programme Director. No application for APL may be made towards the dissertation.
1.4 All individuals are selected and treated on their relative merits and abilities in line with the University's Equal Opportunities Policy. Disabled applicants will be treated according to the same procedure as any other applicant with the added involvement of the Enabling Services Office to assess their needs.


2. Structure of Programme(s)
 
2.1 All modules in the programmes are credit rated in accordance with the Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS) as specified in Section IV of the University Calendar.
2.2 The programme may be of full-time or part-time study. The maximum periods of study are as follows:

Postgraduate Diploma
12 months
36 months (3 years)
Master of Science (MSc)
15 months
60 months (5 years)
2.3 The programme may include lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical work, coursework and projects as specified for individual modules.
2.4 Students for the MSc will be required to undertake a research dissertation on a topic to be agreed with their supervisor.
2.5 Full-time students must submit their dissertation within a timescale agreed with the Programme Co-ordinator. Part-time students must submit their research dissertation within 24 months.


3. Progression
 
3.1 Students must satisfy the regulations governing the Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Standalone Masters Programmes as set out in Section IV of the University Calendar.
3.2 Students must pass the taught (Postgraduate Diploma) component of the programme with an overall mark of 50% or more in order to undertake the MSc dissertation module.


4. Assessment
 
4.1 The performance of students shall be assessed by the Board of Examiners in accordance with the regulations governing the Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Standalone Masters Programmes as set out in Section IV of the University Calendar.
4.2 Assessment may include written assignments, examinations, practical work, research presentations and a dissertation.
4.3 Students for the MSc may be required to attend a viva voce examination.
4.4 The module pass mark and overall pass mark 50%.


5. Award of Qualification(s)
 
Qualifications are awarded according to the regulations governing the Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Standalone Masters Programmes as set out in Section IV of the University Calendar.


6. Placements/Study Abroad/Exchange/Fieldwork
 
6.1 Not applicable.
7. Other
 
Students are required to satisfy the academic and the Attendance and Completion of Programme Requirements as set out in section IV of the University calendar, the programme specification and the programme handbook. Those failing to do so may have their course terminated (see University Calendar Section IV: Transfer, Suspension, Withdrawal and Termination).

These regulations may be revised during the student's period of registration in accordance with procedures approved by Senate.
