Consultative Committee for Safety and Occupational Health

(Reports to Safety and Occupational Health Committee.)

Terms of reference
  1. To provide a forum for the discussion of policy issues and general concerns relating to Safety and Occupational Health in the University with Trades Unions and Safety representatives including representatives from each Faculty.

  2. To report as appropriate to the member of UEG with special responsibility for health and safety, providing feedback to him/her to assist him/her to discharge his/her duties.

  3. To receive all appropriate documentation.
NOTE: This committee discharges the legal obligation for consultation required by the Safety Representatives and Safety Committee Regulations [1977].

Membership

  Chair appointed by member of UEG with special responsibility for health and safety
  A representative from each Faculty (appointed by the Dean concerned)*
  Two representatives from Professional Services (one from Estates and Facilties and one appointed by the Registrar or Chief Operating Officer)
  A Faculty Operating Officer**
  The Head of Occupational Health and Safety
  The Director of Human Resources (or nominee)
  The Director of Student Services (or nominee)
  The Director of Estates and Facilities (or nominee)
  Two representatives of UCU
  Two representatives of UNITE
  Two representatives of UNISON
  The SUSU Health and Safety Officer
  The President of the Students' Union (or a sabbatical officer)
   
  Secretary : Governance Services


*In consultation with the Head of Safety and Occupational Health, to maintain a balance between senior management and safety officer representation (ideally in the ratio 6:4 with at least one Dean and two Associate Deans).

**Appointed by the member of UEG with special responsibility for health and safety.

It will be the responsibility of the Faculty/Service representatives to ensure two-way feedback between the relevant Faculty/Service Safety Consultative Committee and the Consultative Committee.

Alternates may be permitted with the agreement of the Chair (an alternate for the Dean, FOO or Associate Dean should be a person in an equivalent role; Faculty alternates should be from the same Faculty).

For a meeting to be quorate four representatives (including alternates) from campus Unions (including the Students’ Union) should be present (in addition to the standard numerical quoracy requirements as specified in Council Standing Orders).
