Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.

Except where an opt-out has been granted by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.

1. Admissions

The Programmes follow the University Regulations for Admission to Degree Programmes specified in Section IV of the University Calendar.

2. Structure of Programme(s)

Students on taught programmes are required to register for the correct number of credit points and modules as specified in the Programme Specification. Programmes in Modern Languages are offered in full-time and part-time mode, although the part-time route is generally considered more suitable for those only studying one language.

Full-time mode for the Integrated Master of Languages programme requires four years of study, with year three spent at a partner university in a country where one of the languages studied is spoken. Part-time mode requires completion in five to eight years and normally includes one or two significant periods spent abroad.

The programme structure is based on students completing 60 ECTS (120 CATS) for each of parts one, two and three, and 75 ECTS (150 CATS) in the final year.

Students are required to accumulate the required credits as detailed in the Programme Specification to progress. Any student successfully completing a Part of a programme who, for any reason, does not wish to proceed may be eligible to receive an exit award as detailed in the Programme Specification. It consists of modules offered within the Faculty of Humanities and from other faculties.  The regulations governing the programme are the Regulations for Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Undergraduate and Integrated Masters Programmes.

See Section IV of the University Calendar for further details of the Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS).

The Faculty may specify for each degree course certain modules which candidates for that degree course are required to take or complete successfully in each year. Apart from the specified modules (if any) the choice of modules shall be subject in all cases to programme leader approval.

3. Progression

The programmes shall follow the University Regulations for Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Undergraduate and Integrated Masters Programmes specified in Section IV of the University Calendar.

In order to progress to the next part of the programme, students will need to attain an overall average mark of 55% in Part II and Part III.

With the permission of the Faculty candidates may transfer from one programme to another normally no later than the end of the second semester of their programme.

4. Assessment

The performance of candidates shall be assessed by the Board of Examiners in accordance with the University's regulations governing examinations for the relevant programme(s) of study.

5. Award of Qualification(s)

The programmes shall follow the University Regulations for Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Undergraduate and Integrated Masters Programmes specified in Section IV of the University Calendar.

6. Placements/Study Abroad/Exchange/Fieldwork

Undertaking a study abroad element is a compulsory element to the programme and is detailed in the Programme Specification.

7. Other

As a research-led University, we undertake a continuous review of our programmes to ensure quality enhancement and to manage our resources. As a result, these regulations may be revised during a student’s period of registration, however, any revision will be balanced against the requirement that the student should receive the educational service expected. Please read our Disclaimer to see why, when and how changes may be made to a student’s programme.

Students' attendance will be monitored and repeated non-attendance may result in termination of studies.
