Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.

Except where an opt-out has been granted by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.

1. Admissions
 
1.1 For admission to any programme candidates must satisfy the Regulations for Admission to Degree Programmes as specified in Section IV of the University Calendar. Specific information regarding the entry requirement for Winchester School of Art programmes can be found on the Winchester School of Art website.
1.2 Students applying to BA (Hons) Fashion and Textile Design, BA (Hons) Games Design and Art, BA (Hons) Graphic Arts, BA (Hons) Fine Art will be interviewed.
1.3 Specific information regarding the level of English proficiency required for each programme is included in the prospectus and on the Winchester School of Art website.
1.4 BA (Hons) Fashion Design Dalian and BA (Hons) Graphic Arts Dalian Programmes are taught in both Mandarin and English. The University of Southampton will recruit, through its partner Dalian Polytechnic University, the highest performers in the China National University and College Entrance Examination. Applicants resident in the Province of Liaoning that apply to study the programme are expected to achieve a minimum of 180 points out of 300 in the Provincial Art and Design examination. Non-Province based Chinese Nationals are expected to achieve an equivalent minimum score in their respective Provincial Art and Design examination. A minimum of 90 points is required in the examination of English language for both Province and non-Province based applicants.
1.5 All individuals are selected and treated on their relative merits and abilities in line with the University’s Equal Opportunities Policy. Disabled applicants will be treated according to the same procedure as any other applicant with the added involvement of the Enabling Services Office to assess their needs. The BA (Hons) Fashion Design Dalian and BA (Hons) Graphic Arts Dalian programmes follow the agreed policy set out in the agreement with Dalian Polytechnic University.
1.6 Recognition of Prior Learning. If candidates have completed modules at other places of learning and can demonstrate the equivalence of their learning outcomes to a relevant module of the programme, the School of Art may permit such a candidate to join a degree programme at an appropriate part. Such admissions must also comply with the University's regulations on credit transfer.


2. Structure of Programme(s)
 
2.1 Full-time degree programmes normally consist of three years of study, with the exemption of BA (Hons) Fashion Design Dalian, BA (Hons) Graphic Arts Dalian which consist of four years of study.
2.2 All programmes are offered as full-time programmes only.
2.3 All modules in the undergraduate programmes are credit-rated in accordance with the Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS) as specified in Section IV of the University Calendar.
2.4 It may not always be possible for a candidate to study a preferred core option module due to availability or capacity.
2.5 The programme structure and module information are detailed in the programme specifications and module profiles and on the Winchester School of Art website.


3. Progression
 
3.1 Programme follow the University’s general progression rules as set out in Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Undergraduate and Integrated Masters Programmes (University Calendar, Section IV), save that, all modules are core and therefore no compensation for failure is permitted.
3.2 Students on the BA (Hons) Fashion Design Dalian and BA (Hons) Graphic Arts Dalian Programmes who fail following referral only have the option to repeat as a full time internal student.


4. Assessment
 
4.1 The performance of candidates shall be assessed by the School's Board of Examiners in accordance with the University's regulations governing assessment for the relevant programme of study.
4.2 A student who fails to progress under paragraphs 3.1 to 3.3 of section 3 of the Progression Regulations in Section IV of the University Calendar may take Referral assessments in failed modules totalling not more than 60 CATS points (30 ECTS).
4.3 Students on the BA (Hons) Fashion Design Dalian and BA (Hons) Graphic Arts Dalian Programmes are able to refer in all failed modules.
4.4 All the modules on all programmes are core or optional core and therefore compensation does not apply.


5. Award of Qualification(s)
 
5.1 Qualifications are awarded according to the University Regulations for the Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Undergraduate and Integrated Masters Programmes specified in Section IV of the University Calendar.


6. Placements/Study Abroad/Exchange/Fieldwork
 
6.1 A candidate exchange may be available as an alternative core module. Candidates will be advised of the considerations and application procedure. Exchanges will be restricted by destination and subject to availability, suitability of the candidate, criteria set by the School and the University, and the requirements of the UK government and the government of the country and region of the host institution; e.g. regarding visas. To be considered, candidates must make a formal application before a deadline that will be specified each year, outlining their reasons for wishing to study at a particular institution and their plans for their work whilst there. Selection is at the discretion of the host institution and the Head of School.
6.2 Exchanges will normally take place in Semester 2 of Part 2 and will be full-time, normally for a period of 12 weeks. Candidates will be expected to participate fully in the programme of the host institution whilst working on a pre-agreed project. Assessment of a candidate's project work will take place on their return to Winchester School of Art. This assessment will not only encompass preparatory and completed work carried out whilst on exchange but, also the contemporary record of the candidates' reflection on their exchange.


7. Other
 
7.1 As a research-led University, we undertake a continuous review of our programmes to ensure quality enhancement and to manage our resources. As a result, these regulations may be revised during a student’s period of registration, however, any revision will be balanced against the requirement that the student should receive the educational service expected. 7.2 Students are required to satisfy the academic and the Attendance and Completion of Programme Requirements as set out in section IV of the University calendar, the programme specification and the programme handbook. Those students failing to do so may have their course terminated (see University Calendar Section IV: Transfer, Suspension, Withdrawal and Termination). Attendance may be monitored.
7.3 Ethics Committee approval and risk assessments must be completed where required.
