Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.

Except where an opt-out has been granted by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.

1. Admissions
 
1.1 First or upper second-class Bachelor's level honours degree or equivalent from a recognised university in a quantitative subject relevant to the area of study (mathematics, statistics, economics, computer science, physics, astronomy, engineering, etc.).
1.2 English language entry level:  average of 6.5 IELTS and minimum of 6.0 in each IELTS component, or equivalent.


2. Structure of Programme(s)
 
2.1 The taught component of the programme follows the regulations for the taught component of a stand-alone Master's degree as specified in Section IV of the Calendar. It comprises modules which account for 60ECTS/120 CATS points of modules, with a minimum of 45ECTS/90 CATS points at level 7.
2.2 Core and optional modules are as follows.

Core Modules:
MATH6144 Mathematics Project (15ECTS/30 CATS)

Optional Modules:
45ECTS/90CATS in optional modules must be taken, of which up to 15ECTS/30CATS may be chosen from alternative modules in cognate areas at Level 7, as approved by the Doctoral Programme Director.
2.3 Choice of modules is dependent on knowledge on entry, professional examination passes, or exemptions. The academic needs analysis will be used by the student, supervisory team and Doctoral Programme Director to select the modules.
2.4 During the research component of the programme, skills training and development will be directed by the supervisory team, supplemented by a range of courses provided by the UK national training programmes, APTS, NATCOR and MAGIC.


3. Progression
 
3.1 Progression onto the research element of the programme is determined by satisfactory completion of the taught element and follows the regulations for the taught component of a Stand-alone Master's degree as specified in Section IV of the Calendar.
3.2 Including MATH6144, the student must achieve a pass mark of at least 50% in 45ECTS/90CATS at level 7.
3.3 Students who fail the assessment for the taught element may be referred in the summer referral exams.
3.4 Students undergoing referral in the taught element of their programme may, with the approval of the Programme Director, commence the research element of their programme immediately after month eight. However they may only submit their annual research report and thesis following successful referral.
3.5 Those students who do not satisfy the requirements for progression to the research phase of the programme, but who do meet the requirement at Postgraduate Diploma Level will be offered a Postgraduate Diploma exit award.
3.6 Progression in the research element of the programme is monitored, assessed and governed by the regulations for the degree of Integrated PhD in Named Subjects as specified in the Calendar, and the Code of Practice for Research Candidature and Supervision.


4. Assessment
 
4.1 Assessment in the taught element of the programme follows the regulations for the taught component of a Stand-alone Master's degree as specified in Section IV of the Calendar. Examination and assessment is conducted at the end of each semester and as necessary in summer referral exams.
4.2 Assessment in the research element of the programme follows the regulations for an Integrated PhD in Named Subjects as specified in Section V of the Calendar.


5. Award of Qualification(s)
 
5.1 The regulations governing the submission for, assessment and award of this degree are those specified as an Integrated PhD in Named Subjects. The named award is Integrated PhD in Mathematical Sciences.
5.2 Students who have progressed to the research component who exit the programme early may be considered for the award of an MPhil if they have demonstrated the criteria specified for this award in the University's Code of Practice for Research Candidature and Supervision.


6. Placements/Study Abroad/Exchange/Fieldwork
 
6.1 There is no formal requirement to undertake a placement. Where a placement is arranged this will be subject to the University’s normal risk assessment procedures.


7. Other
 
7.1 Students are required to satisfy the Attendance and Completion of Programme Requirements as set out in section IV of the University calendar, the programme specification and the programme handbook. Those failing to do so may have their programme terminated (see University Calendar Section IV: Transfer, Suspension, Withdrawal and Termination).
7.2 As a research-led University, we undertake a continuous review of our programmes to ensure quality enhancement and to manage our resources.
