Research Integrity and Governance Committee (RIGC)

Terms of Reference

The Research Integrity and Governance Committee is a University committee under the responsibility of PVC Research and Enterprise. Its core responsibility will be to foster and develop a culture of research integrity amongst the research community striving for excellence yet acting proportionately.
  1. RIGC will bring together oversight of all the core elements to integrity and needs for research governance including:

    • lead on policy development and implementation;
    • assessment of the impact of regulatory environment applicable to research & enterprise and develop guidance;
    • review and consider reputational implications of collaborating with certain research partners collaborators (eg: tobacco, weapons, hostile regimes).


  2. RIGC will provide oversight and support to University Ethics Committee (UEC), Animal Welfare and Ethics Review Board (AWERB), committees by way of guidance and dissemination particularly relating to research and enterprise activity. RIGC will also link to the Genetic Modification and Biological Safety Committee (GMSBC) on research matters.

  3. RIGC will have direct responsibility for oversight and implementation of certain policies including:

    • Research and Enterprise Code of Conduct (under development)
    • Research integrity and misconduct procedures
    • Conflicts of interest
    • Research data management
    • Authorship Policy (to be developed)
    • Tobacco Policy
    • Export Control Policy (under development)


  4. Indirectly RIGC will have oversight & input to other policies including:

    • University Ethics Policy including the sub-policy Human Participant and Animal Research (UEC and AWERB responsibilities)
    • Intellectual Property regulations
    • Consultancy Policy

Membership

RIGC should have representation across all the core areas of its responsibility to ensure appropriate expertise is available and Faculty representation. The membership will include:

  Chair - The Vice-President with the Research portfolio
  Lay member
  Chairs of UEC, AWERB, GMBSC
  Director of the Graduate College
  Associate Deans (Research) for all Faculties
  Chief Information Officer (or representative of iSolutions)
  Library representative (tbc)
  Finance representative (tbc)
  Research and Innovation Services representative - Head of IP, Contracts and Policies
   
  NB: A single member may represent more than one membership position listed above.
   
In attendance
  Research Integrity and Governance Manager (Research and Innovation Services)
  Representatives of other PSGs or across the Faculties as required from time to time for specific matters
