  1. The degree of Doctor of Letters (DLitt)1, Doctor of Music (DMus), Doctor of Science (DSc), Doctor of Science in the Social Sciences (DSc(Social Sciences)) or Doctor of Laws (LLD) may be awarded to a graduate of the University who has been deemed by the Senate, after consideration of a report from the Faculty Programme Committee concerned, to have distinguished him/herself by his/her contributions to original research or learning or, in the case of DMus, to musical composition.

  2. A member of the staff (as defined in the Regulations for Members of Staff in Candidature for Higher Degrees) who is a graduate of another university may apply for the award of the degree of DLitt, DMus, DSc, DSc(Social Sciences) or LLD, provided that a substantial and important part of the work submitted has been carried out after the candidate joined the staff of the University.

  3. With the approval of a Faculty Programme Committee and Senate a person who has been a visiting member of staff for not less than two years and who is a graduate of another university may apply for the award of the degree of DLitt, DMus, DSc, DSc(Social Sciences) or LLD, provided that a substantial and important part of the work submitted has been carried out after the candidate entered his/her period of collaboration with the University.

  4. An application for the degree of DLitt, DMus, DSc, DSc(Social Sciences) or LLD must be based either wholly or to a substantial extent on original work of distinction carried out independently by the candidate. If any of the work submitted has been produced jointly with others, the candidate must include a written statement indicating the share which he/she personally took in the work. He/she is also required to indicate whether or not the work or any part of it has been submitted, successfully or unsuccessfully, for a degree in this or any other university. In all cases other than an application for the degree of DMus based upon original musical compositions the candidate is required to submit a general title for the submitted works and a statement briefly outlining the main theme or themes running through his/her publications and indicating those areas considered to contain a significant and clearly defined contribution to knowledge. A submission for the degree of DMus based upon original musical compositions must be accompanied by a list of the works submitted and a brief statement of the candidate's aims and of the nature of the work.

  5. An application for the degree of DLitt, DMus, DSc, DSc(Social Sciences) or LLD may be submitted not less than six years after the date of first graduation. Notification of intention to submit an application must be made to the Academic Registrar, University of Southampton, who will advise on application procedures and the fee payable. Permission may be granted to include work still in manuscript but which has been accepted for publication. A submission for the degree of DMus based upon original musical compositions may include, as an alternative to publication, unpublished works accompanied by evidence of performance in a fully professional context and recordings on tape or disc may be submitted in addition to the scores of all or any of the works which form the material of the application.

  6. The University Library may retain one copy of the work or works approved for the award of the degree or may require a list of publications submitted by a successful candidate to be retained in the University Library.
